First off, I’m going to use the word’s “agro” and “threat”. They are basically the same thing when it comes to tanking.
The job of the tank is to hold agro (hold the attention of the enemies) while other people heal and do damage. The tank has more armor and health than everyone else (ideally, unless their equipment sucks), and so they are ideal for holding agro.
Agro (aka threat) works as numbers. If someone does 100 damage to an enemy, then that person goes 100 agro. If someone heals the tank for 100, they get 50 agro. It’s all numbers!
(Over-healing doesn’t cause any threat/agro. If you heal a tank that’s already full health, then zero agro happens.)
If you run up to an enemy and they attack you, but you don’t attack back, it’s basically the equivalent of having 0.001 agro. Technically not zero, because they are coming after you. This is called “body agro” in the game.
Tanks have different abilities to make them generate MORE agro than normal. For example a Paladin has Righteous Fury which makes all Holy spells and attacks do 80% more threat/agro. So when they attack for 100 damage, and it’s a Holy spell, it does 180 agro instead (assuming Righteous Fury is active).
A Warrior has Defense Stance, which is very similar to a Paladin’s Righteous Fury.
The point of these abilities is to help the tank keep the attention of the enemies, even as they don’t do as much damage as the other people in the group.
Different classes have different abilities to taunt. There is an ability named “Taunt” for Warriors, but for other tanking classes, it’s called something different. They are all very similar.
Taunt abilities are different when it comes to the numbers of agro. I think it’s best explained as an example.
Let’s say a Hunter attacks an enemy first and does 10,000 damage. That’s 10,000 more than the tank has, which is a lot! Then a Warrior (for example) uses Taunt. Now he matches the agro of the Hunter (10,000) AND the mob is programmed to attack the Warrior for the next 3 seconds, so the Warrior can build up even more agro.
Taunt is NOT generally used if the tank ALREADY has agro.
Tanks ALSO do damage, and some tanks even do a lot of damage! But their main focus is to have lots of health/armor, and make the enemies attack them instead of other people. If tanks always did the best damage, then nobody would want to play a “damage class”.
Some classes have abilities that GIVE agro to the tank. Hunter’s have Misdirection. How it works is they cast the spell on the tank, and then attack an enemy. This causes all their damage (for 3 seconds, once they begin to attack) to cause the TANK to get the agro instead of the Hunter.
Rogues have a similar ability called Tricks of the Trade.
So both Hunters and Rogues can help a tank get even more agro, which can be very nice in tricky situations where more enemies join in during the fight, and the tank is busy trying to keep agro on the enemies that he was already fighting.
Side note: It’s still best to let a tank run in first and then use these helpful abilities after the fight starts. This is to ensure that the tank is ready.
Well taunt is the ability that the tanks and secondary tanks use to pull enemies off other players that are not tanks. This allows the healers to focus on the healing the tanks and the dps able to do damage without being attacked. Taunt is a great ability and a must have for tanks in raids and instance.
taunt does do exactly that, it brings all the aggro back to you so the healer knows who to heal. you usually only have to use it when you have a massive pull, but in some cases the dps can steal your aggro in which case you will need it back. it would kinda depend on if your a warrior or a paladin though.
Taunt just gets something off of someone, Consecration and Thunder Clap, are Aggro abilities. If you are a warrior Sunder Armour is like the best ever, EVER.
Its been a while for me, but doesnt taunt make the things everyone else is fighting, come to you? As in, it makes the monsters attack you, and not them?
